Romans 10

1 Dear brothers and sisters, the longing of my heart and my prayer to God is for the people of Israel to be saved. 2 I know what enthusiasm they have for God, but it is misdirected zeal. 3For they don’t understand God’s way of making people right with himself. Refusing to accept God’s way, they cling to their own way of getting right with God by trying to keep the law. 4 For Christ has already accomplished the purpose for which the law was given. As a result, all who believe in him are made right with God.

This small passage where paul discusses his feelings about the people of israel reminds me of people today. People say they love God and want to follow, yet the still are attached to the old way, that works and "church" will bring them salvation. They believe that by having the perfect service or the perfect worship is more important than having your heart being right with god. As said through most of romans because Jesus died for us we no longer need to fulfill the law, and that as long as we believe we are right with God.

Romans 9: Israelis unbelief

30 What does all this mean? Even though the Gentiles were not trying to follow God’s standards, they were made right with God. And it was by faith that this took place. 31 But the people of Israel, who tried so hard to get right with God by keeping the law, never succeeded. 32 Why not? Because they were trying to get right with God by keeping the law instead of by trusting in him. They stumbled over the great rock in their path. 33 God warned them of this in the Scriptures when he said,

“I am placing a stone in Jerusalem[p] that makes people stumble,
a rock that makes them fall.
But anyone who trusts in him
will never be disgraced.”

The people of israel made a mistake by only looking at the law. They have forgotten what it truly meant to follow God. It meant that trusting in his ways and believing in him was out priority. Even with gods warning the people still stumble. Its like present day, So many of us focus on just doing what is right and not really trusting what God has in store. This warning is not just for the Israelite but it is also a warning for us too.

Romans 9: Gods selection of Israel pt 4

25 Concerning the Gentiles, God says in the prophecy of Hosea

  • Gentiles are the non-Israelites

“Those who were not my people,
I will now call my people.
And I will love those
whom I did not love before.”

  • God is willing to call us his own and love us even though he has no obligation to.
26 And,

“Then, at the place where they were told,
‘You are not my people,’
there they will be called
‘children of the living God.’”

  • he accepts us into his family!

27 And concerning Israel, Isaiah the prophet cried out,

“Though the people of Israel are as numerous as the sand of the seashore,
only a remnant will be saved.
28 For the Lord will carry out his sentence upon the earth
quickly and with finality.”

  • even though the israelite were the "chosen ones" not all will be saved.
  • just because you are born into a certain status doesn't mean that you are automatically saved

29 And Isaiah said the same thing in another place:

“If the Lord of Heaven’s Armies
had not spared a few of our children,
we would have been wiped out like Sodom,
destroyed like Gomorrah.”

  • whats this reference to?

Romans 9: Gods selection of Israel pt 3

17 For the Scriptures say that God told Pharaoh, “I have appointed you for the very purpose of displaying my power in you and to spread my fame throughout the earth.”18 So you see, God chooses to show mercy to some, and he chooses to harden the hearts of others so they refuse to listen.

19 Well then, you might say, “Why does God blame people for not responding? Haven’t they simply done what he makes them do?”

20 No, don’t say that. Who are you, a mere human being, to argue with God? Should the thing that was created say to the one who created it, “Why have you made me like this?” 21 When a potter makes jars out of clay, doesn’t he have a right to use the same lump of clay to make one jar for decoration and another to throw garbage into? 22 In the same way, even though God has the right to show his anger and his power, he is very patient with those on whom his anger falls, who are destined for destruction. 23 He does this to make the riches of his glory shine even brighter on those to whom he shows mercy, who were prepared in advance for glory. 24 And we are among those whom he selected, both from the Jews and from the Gentiles.

  • God plans out what we do, even if out hearts have been hardened
  • even though some people may question Gods will what gives them the right?
  • he is our father and creator, we have NO right to question his judgements or decisions.
  • who are we to say whats right or wrong
  • God has the right to be angry and power with us, yet he is patient and shows his mercy.

Romans 9: Gods selection of Israel pt 2

6 Well then, has God failed to fulfill his promise to Israel? No, for not all who are born into the nation of Israel are truly members of God’s people! 7 Being descendants of Abraham doesn’t make them truly Abraham’s children. For the Scriptures say, “Isaac is the son through whom your descendants will be counted,” though Abraham had other children, too. 8 This means that Abraham’s physical descendants are not necessarily children of God. Only the children of the promise are considered to be Abraham’s children.9 For God had promised, “I will return about this time next year, and Sarah will have a son.”

10 This son was our ancestor Isaac. When he married Rebekah, she gave birth to twins. 11 But before they were born, before they had done anything good or bad, she received a message from God. (This message shows that God chooses people according to his own purposes; 12 he calls people, but not according to their good or bad works.) She was told, “Your older son will serve your younger son.” 13 In the words of the Scriptures, “I loved Jacob, but I rejected Esau.”

14 Are we saying, then, that God was unfair? Of course not! 15 For God said to Moses,

“I will show mercy to anyone I choose,
and I will show compassion to anyone I choose.”

16 So it is God who decides to show mercy. We can neither choose it nor work for it.

This passage was fairly straight forward. we are not automatically chosen to be his people but he chooses us to be. we cannot work for grace nor mercy, only he can give it to us. He chooses us for a purpose no matter if we are bad or good. Nothing determines what God can do, he has all power to do as he pleases. Nothing we do can make him do something. He is not obligated to serve us, but we are obligated to serve him

Romans 9: Gods selection of Israel pt 1

1 With Christ as my witness, I speak with utter truthfulness. My conscience and the Holy Spirit confirm it. 2 My heart is filled with bitter sorrow and unending grief 3 for my people, my Jewish brothers and sisters. I would be willing to be forever cursed—cut off from Christ!—if that would save them. 4 They are the people of Israel, chosen to be God’s adopted children. God revealed his glory to them. He made covenants with them and gave them his law. He gave them the privilege of worshiping him and receiving his wonderful promises. 5 Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob are their ancestors, and Christ himself was an Israelite as far as his human nature is concerned. And he is God, the one who rules over everything and is worthy of eternal praise! Amen.
  • why is paul sad about his brothers?
  • these brothers and sisters were taken in by God
  • God begun a relationship with them and revealed his glory
  • He made promises and gave hope to them
  • the people of Israel were chosen by God.
  • all the important people especially Jesus were from Israeli decent

Romans 8: Nothing can separate us from Gods Love pt 3

38 And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. 39 No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
  • nothing can separate us from Gods love...
  • not even hell nor death
  • its so amazing how God can love us so much when we dont deserve it.
  • thank you father

Romans 8: nothing can separate us from Gods love pt 1

31 What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us? 32 Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else? 33 Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one—for God himself has given us right standing with himself. 34Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us.
  • out God is so mighty that he is willing to give us everything
  • He gave let us stand right with him
  • no one will condemn us, because christ has died and risen for us

Romans 8: The Future glory pt 2

26 And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. 27 And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will. 28 And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. 29 For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. 30 And having chosen them, he called them to come to him. And having called them, he gave them right standing with himself. And having given them right standing, he gave them his glory.

  • holy spirit is what helps us
  • the holy spirit wants us to be with God
  • God makes everything work together/ out
  • he knows us so well that he is able to do that
  • those who were standing right with God are given his glory

Romans 8: The Future Glory pt 1

18 Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he will reveal to us later. 19 For all creation is waiting eagerly for that future day when God will reveal who his children really are. 20 Against its will, all creation was subjected to God’s curse. But with eager hope, 21 the creation looks forward to the day when it will join God’s children in glorious freedom from death and decay. 22 For we know that all creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. 23 And we believers also groan, even though we have the Holy Spirit within us as a foretaste of future glory, for we long for our bodies to be released from sin and suffering. We, too, wait with eager hope for the day when God will give us our full rights as his adopted children, including the new bodies he has promised us. 24 We were given this hope when we were saved. (If we already have something, we don’t need to hope for it. 25 But if we look forward to something we don’t yet have, we must wait patiently and confidently.)
  • our sufferings now is nothing compared to the prized ahead
  • we wait eagerly for the day when we are released from the sin and suffering of the world to join our father in heaven
  • we were given this hope when Jesus saved us
  • we dont need to hope for something we already have...Jesus has already saved us
  • so we must wait patiently and confidently until that day

Romans 8: Life in the spirit pt 3

15 So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.”16 For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children. 17 And since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God’s glory. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering.
  • no spirit= slaves
  • we have obtained Gods spirit when he took us in
  • he is our father
  • because we our his children we are also his heirs in his glory
  • if we share in Christ glory we must also share his suffering
living in the spirit frees lets us live in the light. we are able to become everything that our wants for us. we go through suffering only because we must just as christ did. Living in the spirit is what frees us from living in our sin.

Romans 8: Life in the spirit pt 2

9 But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.) 10 And Christ lives within you, so even though your body will die because of sin, the Spirit gives you life because you have been made right with God. 11 The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.
  • we are not controlled by our sinful nature
  • the spirit controls us
  • even though our bodies die with sin we live eternally because the spirit has made us right with God
  • the spirit who raised Jesus from the grave lives in us
  • God will raise us from the dead just as he did for Jesus
12 Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do. 13 For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.
  • we have no obligation to our sinful nature
  • if we live by sin we will die
  • if we live by the spirit we will live and our sinful nature will die
  • anyone who lives by the spirit are children of the Lord

Romans 8: Life in the spirit pt 1

1 So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. 2 And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death. 3 The law of Moses was unable to save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature. So God did what the law could not do. He sent his own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have. And in that body God declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving his Son as a sacrifice for our sins. 4 He did this so that the just requirement of the law would be fully satisfied for us, who no longer follow our sinful nature but instead follow the Spirit.
  • those who believe in Jesus will not be condemned
  • because we belong to him the spirit has free ed us from sin
  • because of our sinful nature we are not saved by laws
  • God in his might did what needed to be done to ends sins grasps over our lives( sounds like a love story :))
  • Jesus dying on the cross fulfilled the requirement that we were law bounded to

5 Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. 6 So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace. 7 For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will. 8 That’s why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God.

  • those who are dominated (strong word) by their sinfulness think about sinful things and those who are under the holy spirit only think about pleasing God
  • letting sin take over us leads to death
  • letting the spirit leads to life
  • sinful nature is AlWAYS hostile to God
  • and those who follow it can never please God

romans 7: Struggling with Sin

14 So the trouble is not with the law, for it is spiritual and good. The trouble is with me, for I am all too human, a slave to sin. 15 I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate. 16 But if I know that what I am doing is wrong, this shows that I agree that the law is good. 17 So I am not the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it.
  • vs 15 is so true
  • it is sin inside of me that is making me do wrong

18 And I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. I want to do what is right, but I can’t. 19 I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway. 20 But if I do what I don’t want to do, I am not really the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it.

  • paul keep talking about he knows what is right yet he does wrong
  • this part of the passage seems redundant
  • paul still talks about his struggles and how it is sin inside of him that is making us do wrong and not us.

21 I have discovered this principle of life—that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. 22 I love God’s law with all my heart. 23 But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me. 24 Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? 25 Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord. So you see how it is: In my mind I really want to obey God’s law, but because of my sinful nature I am a slave to sin.

  • the war in our mind with sin is what makes us a slave to sin
  • only Jesus can free us of this sin
  • Paul couldn't be so true, I want to obey god but because of our sinful nature we are still slaves to sin
  • Pauls struggles seems like a struggle every Christian would have. I know I do...

Romans 7: Gods Laws reveal our sins

7
Well then, am I suggesting that the law of God is sinful? Of course not! In fact, it was the law that showed me my sin. I would never have known that coveting is wrong if the law had not said, “You must not covet.” 8 But sin used this command to arouse all kinds of covetous desires within me! If there were no law, sin would not have that power.9 At one time I lived without understanding the law. But when I learned the command not to covet, for instance, the power of sin came to life,10 and I died. So I discovered that the law’s commands, which were supposed to bring life, brought spiritual death instead. 11 Sin took advantage of those commands and deceived me; it used the commands to kill me. 12 But still, the law itself is holy, and its commands are holy and right and good.

  • The Law is not sinful, it is holy right and good.
  • it helps us to know what sin is
  • before learning and understanding the law we dont really know what sin is
  • but when we learn of the law sin, like paul says, comes into our lives
  • sin takes advantage of the commands of the Law and leads us astray.
  • it stirs in us unholy desires
  • the Laws commands brought death instead of life
  • sin takes advantage of them and decieves us
  • it kills us

13 But how can that be? Did the law, which is good, cause my death? Of course not! Sin used what was good to bring about my condemnation to death. So we can see how terrible sin really is. It uses God’s good commands for its own evil purposes.

  • sin used what was good to kill us
  • sin is so evil that it would taint something so good for its own evil desires.

Romans 7: No longer Bound to the Law

1 Now, dear brothers and sisters—you who are familiar with the law—don’t you know that the law applies only while a person is living? 2 For example, when a woman marries, the law binds her to her husband as long as he is alive. But if he dies, the laws of marriage no longer apply to her. 3 So while her husband is alive, she would be committing adultery if she married another man. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law and does not commit adultery when she remarries.
  • the law only applies for when a person is alive
  • ex. woman and her husband are bound by law until death do they part
  • so law applies until a person has died
4 So, my dear brothers and sisters, this is the point: You died to the power of the law when you died with Christ. And now you are united with the one who was raised from the dead. As a result, we can produce a harvest of good deeds for God. 5 When we were controlled by our old nature, sinful desires were at work within us, and the law aroused these evil desires that produced a harvest of sinful deeds, resulting in death. 6 But now we have been released from the law, for we died to it and are no longer captive to its power. Now we can serve God, not in the old way of obeying the letter of the law, but in the new way of living in the Spirit.
  • we died to the law when we died with jesus
  • because we died we are free from the law and raised again==> results in good deeds for God
  • the Law brought up evil natures that we were once bound to.
  • but because we are free ed from the law it no longer has power on us
  • we are free to serve God by living in the spirit than by obeying the law

Romans 6:Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ pt 6

20 When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the obligation to do right. 21 And what was the result? You are now ashamed of the things you used to do, things that end in eternal doom. 22 But now you are free from the power of sin and have become slaves of God. Now you do those things that lead to holiness and result in eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.

  • we were free from an obligation to do right
  • we are obligated to do right
  • since christ paid for our sins we have become slaves to God
  • now we are held to a standard to live in holiness
  • what pays from sin is death, but with god we are given eternal life for free
  • this is all made possible throught Christ
The one thing I think is super important is when paul says that we are obligated to do right. that we can no longer be like children and have a duty to do what is right.

Romans 6:Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ pt 5

19 Because of the weakness of your human nature, I am using the illustration of slavery to help you understand all this. Previously, you let yourselves be slaves to impurity and lawlessness, which led ever deeper into sin. Now you must give yourselves to be slaves to righteous living so that you will become holy.

  • Paul relate us to slaves because we are human and weak
  • we were once slaves to the sins of the earth
  • we are now called to become slaves of God
  • to live righteously so that we may become holy

Romans 6:Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ pt 4

15 Well then, since God’s grace has set us free from the law, does that mean we can go on sinning? Of course not! 16 Don’t you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey? You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God, which leads to righteous living. 17 Thank God! Once you were slaves of sin, but now you wholeheartedly obey this teaching we have given you. 18 Now you are free from your slavery to sin, and you have become slaves to righteous living.
  • just because we are free ed from the law we still shouldn't break it
  • we become slaves to whom ever we obey
  • if we become a slave to sin we become a slave to death
  • if we choose to obey christ it will lead to living a life worth living
  • the romans chose this new life which allowed them to be free from sin and live a righteous life.
Being free from sin is about making the choice to whom we want to obey. If we choose to obey God we will be free'd from death and eternal life awaits, but if we choose sin only death awaits.
Just because God shows us grace doesn't mean that we can take advantage of it. we should commit ourlives to his ways and choose him as our master.

Romans 6:Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ pt 3

12 Do not let sin control the way you live; do not give in to sinful desires. 13 Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin. Instead, give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life. So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God. 14 Sin is no longer your master, for you no longer live under the requirements of the law. Instead, you live under the freedom of God’s grace.(NLT)
  • Dont give into sin
  • Dont let yourself become something for sin
  • Only give youself to God, we owe him everything
  • God gave us new life, and we should serve him with that life
  • Use the body God gave you for his kingdom
  • Sin no longer rules over us, we dont need to live under the law(Abraham law?)
  • we are free to live because of his grace
so far it seems pretty straight forward. God gave us new life and we should live for him with that life. Its like if someone saved you from getting hit by a car wouldnt you feel indebted or want to serve that person? well same goes for God. He saved us from a major life of pain and suffering so we should live a life to serve and honor him.

Romans 6:Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ pt 2

5 Since we have been united with him in his death, we will also be raised to life as he was. 6 We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. 7 For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin. 8 And since we died with Christ, we know we will also live with him. 9 We are sure of this because Christ was raised from the dead, and he will never die again. Death no longer has any power over him.10 When he died, he died once to break the power of sin. But now that he lives, he lives for the glory of God. 11 So you also should consider yourselves to be dead to the power of sin and alive to God through Christ Jesus.(NLT)
  • since we were tied with Jesus when he died, we are also tied with him when he was given life
  • sin was taken and put to the cross so that sin wont hold us down
  • when Jesus died we were set free
  • our sins and our past lives died with him we were also born anew
  • we know that sin has lost its power because Jesus overcame death(death= sin) and rose from the dead
  • we should consider ourselves to be dead to sin and alive to god
  • we are able to be free from sin because of the love that Jesus and God had for us.

Romans 6:Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ pt 1

1 Well then, should we keep on sinning so that God can show us more and more of his wonderful grace? 2 Of course not! Since we have died to sin, how can we continue to live in it? 3 Or have you forgotten that when we were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism, we joined him in his death? 4 For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.(NLT)
  • we shouldnt keep sinning even though God shows us mercy
  • since sin is no more why do we continue to live in it?
  • when Jesus died we died
  • when he was brought to life again so were we
  • Christ has given us new life so that we may leave a life of sin

Romans 5: Death Through Adam, Life Through Christ pt 3

18
Yes, Adam’s one sin brings condemnation for everyone, but Christ’s one act of righteousness brings a right relationship with God and new life for everyone. 19 Because one person disobeyed God, many became sinners. But because one other person obeyed God, many will be made righteous.
  • Adams sin brought chaos to everyone, but Christ saves us
  • His one act paid the price for all of our sins and fixed the broken relationship with our father
20 God’s law was given so that all people could see how sinful they were. But as people sinned more and more, God’s wonderful grace became more abundant. 21 So just as sin ruled over all people and brought them to death, now God’s wonderful grace rules instead, giving us right standing with God and resulting in eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
  • Gods laws were made to show us how sinful we are
  • as people sin more and more gods grace also became more and more
  • we are no longer tied to death but instead we are now right with God
  • its because instead of sin ruling over our lives Gods grace took control and made justified us
  • because of his grace we are given the opportunity to have eternal life and live with our lord Christ Jesus.

Romans 5: Death Through Adam, Life Through Christ pt 2

15 But there is a great difference between Adam’s sin and God’s gracious gift. For the sin of this one man, Adam, brought death to many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of forgiveness to many through this other man, Jesus Christ.16 And the result of God’s gracious gift is very different from the result of that one man’s sin. For Adam’s sin led to condemnation, but God’s free gift leads to our being made right with God, even though we are guilty of many sins. 17 For the sin of this one man, Adam, caused death to rule over many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of righteousness, for all who receive it will live in triumph over sin and death through this one man, Jesus Christ. (NLT)
  • The sin of one man brought death to many and the actions of another saved many
  • Gods wonderful FREE gift is so good
  • his grace and gift saved us from condemnation
  • his gift helps with making ourselves right with God
  • God love, Mercy and forgiveness is more powerful than death
  • if we choose to receive his gift we will be saved through Christ alone
  • Adam caused death to rule over many while Jesus saved the lives of many

Romans 5: Peace with God Through Faith pt 2-3 (ESV)

6For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— 8but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.9Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. 10For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. 11More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

  • Christ died for us when at our weakest state
  • he died for those who were ungodly
  • like in reality who would really die for another for a reason many people dont believe in? there is the occasional yes but I dont really think alot of people would. this is really what makes God amazing.
  • yet we are unrighteous and unholy and he saves us any way
  • God still shows love to us even though we still sin
  • because of Christs blood we were able to be reunited in our relationship with God.
  • we are saved by his blood
  • we pay no price Gods love is that amazing.

Romans 5: Death Through Adam, Life Through Christ pt 1

12Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— 13for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. 14Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.
  • Death comes from sin
  • Because we are all sinners death is upon us
  • Before there was any law sin was here
  • sin is not taken into account when there is no law
  • Death was reigned from Adams time to moses
  • even though no one had broken any laws refers to 1Cor15:45 The resurrection of the dead
45Thus it is written, "The first man Adam became a living being";the last Adam became a life-giving spirit.
  • the one who was to come was a life-giving spirit
  • so Through Adam there is death
  • since Jesus was born into this world he became the second( the last) part of him... the life giving spirit
  • so through Christ there is life

Romans 5: Peace and Joy part 3

9Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through him! 10For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! 11Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

  • Justification(act of god making a sinner righteous before him) of our sins could not be paid through money of deeds...but it cost blood
  • crazy... I'm not a parent but that must be the worst thing imaginable.
  • Jesus's death reunited us with God
  • His death also saved us from eternal doom and Gods all powerful wrath
  • Because Jesus reunited or relationship with God we are saved.
  • Jesus not only allows us to be good with God but because of him we able to rejoice and love him.
  • now that I think about it if our relationship wasn't mended it would be hard rejoicing.

so through faith we are saved, Gods love is amazing and because of our savior we are saved.

Romans 5: Peace and Joy part 2

6You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. 8But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

we truely are undeserving of his love. When we were nothing Christ gave his life to save us. so many times we forget that this life was set free by he who paid the ultimate price. Gods love is truly amazing

Romans 5: Peace and Joy part 1

1Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. 3Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.
  • Through Jesus we are able to meet with God
  • we are able to have hope through Gods glory
  • through perseverance we are able to grow
  • through suffering God provides hope, hope of salvation
  • having hope will not disappoint because Gods love is truly amazing

Romans 4: Abraham justified by faith pt 2.

18Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, "So shall your offspring be." 19Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead—since he was about a hundred years old—and that Sarah's womb was also dead. 20Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, 21being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised. 22This is why "it was credited to him as righteousness." 23The words "it was credited to him" were written not for him alone,24but also for us, to whom God will credit righteousness—for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. 25He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.

  • Abraham's faith was so strong when all things seemed impossible
  • even when everything seemed so impossible he continued to grow and give glory to god
  • being righteous is having faith in God
  • Jesus paid for our sins and was raised for our justification
  • justification: Gods act of declaring or making a sinner righteous before him.

Romans 4: Abraham justified by faith pt 1.

13It was not through law that Abraham and his offspring received the promise that he would be heir of the world, but through the righteousness that comes by faith. 14For if those who live by law are heirs, faith has no value and the promise is worthless, 15because law brings wrath. And where there is no law there is no transgression.

Through the righteousness that comes by faith. It isnt what we do its what we believe that saves us. Abraham didnt live his life by the law, instead he lived his life through faith and faith along. This seems to be pauls main message in these first few chapters of Romans.

16Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham's offspring—not only to those who are of the law but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all. 17As it is written: "I have made you a father of many nations." He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed—the God who gives life to the dead and calls things that are not as though they were.

So continuing on what paul was saying in chapter 3. We are not saved people because we follow the law but instead it is because of our faith that we are saved.

Romans 3:Righteousness Through Faith

21But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, 23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— 26he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.

thats how much God loves us. His justice is different than the justice in our world today. Gods righteousness is expressed through us, his followers with faith. none of us are any better than each other. we all fall short from the prize.. yet god saves us...thats true love

27Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. On what principle? On that of observing the law? No, but on that of faith. 28For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from observing the law. 29Is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles too? Yes, of Gentiles too, 30since there is only one God, who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through that same faith. 31Do we, then, nullify the law by this faith? Not at all! Rather, we uphold the law.

going to the timeline, this whole chapter in romans deals with jews and gentiles in the society. Jews at the time believed that the rituals and mindsets they had meant that they were the "chosen ones". Paul brings up in this chapter that they are wrong and alot of times I think we forget that. Our faith and belief in God is what defines us not laws or rituals that society has brought up.

Romans 3: No one is Righteous

9What shall we conclude then? Are we any better? Not at all! We have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under sin. 10As it is written:
"There is no one righteous, not even one;
11there is no one who understands,
no one who seeks God.
12All have turned away,
they have together become worthless;
there is no one who does good,
not even one."
13"Their throats are open graves;
their tongues practice deceit."
"The poison of vipers is on their lips."
14"Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness."
15"Their feet are swift to shed blood;
16ruin and misery mark their ways,
17and the way of peace they do not know."
18"There is no fear of God before their eyes."

19Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. 20Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin.

this passage is so reassuring and convicting... as a leader sometimes we forget that. Sometimes we do think we are better and think we are righteous when indeed we' re not. When I read this I feel convicted..I mean really what right do any of us have to think we are better or more right than each other. It isnt enough just to live following the law but we really have to believe in it.
