Romans 8: The Future glory pt 2
26 And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. 27 And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will. 28 And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. 29 For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. 30 And having chosen them, he called them to come to him. And having called them, he gave them right standing with himself. And having given them right standing, he gave them his glory.
- holy spirit is what helps us
- the holy spirit wants us to be with God
- God makes everything work together/ out
- he knows us so well that he is able to do that
- those who were standing right with God are given his glory

Romans 8: Life in the spirit pt 1
1 So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. 2 And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death. 3 The law of Moses was unable to save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature. So God did what the law could not do. He sent his own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have. And in that body God declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving his Son as a sacrifice for our sins. 4 He did this so that the just requirement of the law would be fully satisfied for us, who no longer follow our sinful nature but instead follow the Spirit.
- those who believe in Jesus will not be condemned
- because we belong to him the spirit has free ed us from sin
- because of our sinful nature we are not saved by laws
- God in his might did what needed to be done to ends sins grasps over our lives( sounds like a love story :))
- Jesus dying on the cross fulfilled the requirement that we were law bounded to
5 Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. 6 So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace. 7 For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will. 8 That’s why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God.
- those who are dominated (strong word) by their sinfulness think about sinful things and those who are under the holy spirit only think about pleasing God
- letting sin take over us leads to death
- letting the spirit leads to life
- sinful nature is AlWAYS hostile to God
- and those who follow it can never please God
romans 7: Struggling with Sin
14 So the trouble is not with the law, for it is spiritual and good. The trouble is with me, for I am all too human, a slave to sin. 15 I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate. 16 But if I know that what I am doing is wrong, this shows that I agree that the law is good. 17 So I am not the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it.
- vs 15 is so true
- it is sin inside of me that is making me do wrong
18 And I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. I want to do what is right, but I can’t. 19 I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway. 20 But if I do what I don’t want to do, I am not really the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it.
- paul keep talking about he knows what is right yet he does wrong
- this part of the passage seems redundant
- paul still talks about his struggles and how it is sin inside of him that is making us do wrong and not us.
21 I have discovered this principle of life—that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. 22 I love God’s law with all my heart. 23 But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me. 24 Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? 25 Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord. So you see how it is: In my mind I really want to obey God’s law, but because of my sinful nature I am a slave to sin.
- the war in our mind with sin is what makes us a slave to sin
- only Jesus can free us of this sin
- Paul couldn't be so true, I want to obey god but because of our sinful nature we are still slaves to sin
- Pauls struggles seems like a struggle every Christian would have. I know I do...

Romans 7: Gods Laws reveal our sins
- The Law is not sinful, it is holy right and good.
- it helps us to know what sin is
- before learning and understanding the law we dont really know what sin is
- but when we learn of the law sin, like paul says, comes into our lives
- sin takes advantage of the commands of the Law and leads us astray.
- it stirs in us unholy desires
- the Laws commands brought death instead of life
- sin takes advantage of them and decieves us
- it kills us
13 But how can that be? Did the law, which is good, cause my death? Of course not! Sin used what was good to bring about my condemnation to death. So we can see how terrible sin really is. It uses God’s good commands for its own evil purposes.
- sin used what was good to kill us
- sin is so evil that it would taint something so good for its own evil desires.

Romans 7: No longer Bound to the Law
- the law only applies for when a person is alive
- ex. woman and her husband are bound by law until death do they part
- so law applies until a person has died
- we died to the law when we died with jesus
- because we died we are free from the law and raised again==> results in good deeds for God
- the Law brought up evil natures that we were once bound to.
- but because we are free ed from the law it no longer has power on us
- we are free to serve God by living in the spirit than by obeying the law

Romans 6:Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ pt 6
20 When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the obligation to do right. 21 And what was the result? You are now ashamed of the things you used to do, things that end in eternal doom. 22 But now you are free from the power of sin and have become slaves of God. Now you do those things that lead to holiness and result in eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.
- we were free from an obligation to do right
- we are obligated to do right
- since christ paid for our sins we have become slaves to God
- now we are held to a standard to live in holiness
- what pays from sin is death, but with god we are given eternal life for free
- this is all made possible throught Christ

Romans 6:Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ pt 5
19 Because of the weakness of your human nature, I am using the illustration of slavery to help you understand all this. Previously, you let yourselves be slaves to impurity and lawlessness, which led ever deeper into sin. Now you must give yourselves to be slaves to righteous living so that you will become holy.
- Paul relate us to slaves because we are human and weak
- we were once slaves to the sins of the earth
- we are now called to become slaves of God
- to live righteously so that we may become holy

Romans 6:Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ pt 4
- just because we are free ed from the law we still shouldn't break it
- we become slaves to whom ever we obey
- if we become a slave to sin we become a slave to death
- if we choose to obey christ it will lead to living a life worth living
- the romans chose this new life which allowed them to be free from sin and live a righteous life.
Romans 6:Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ pt 3
- Dont give into sin
- Dont let yourself become something for sin
- Only give youself to God, we owe him everything
- God gave us new life, and we should serve him with that life
- Use the body God gave you for his kingdom
- Sin no longer rules over us, we dont need to live under the law(Abraham law?)
- we are free to live because of his grace

Romans 6:Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ pt 2
- since we were tied with Jesus when he died, we are also tied with him when he was given life
- sin was taken and put to the cross so that sin wont hold us down
- when Jesus died we were set free
- our sins and our past lives died with him we were also born anew
- we know that sin has lost its power because Jesus overcame death(death= sin) and rose from the dead
- we should consider ourselves to be dead to sin and alive to god
- we are able to be free from sin because of the love that Jesus and God had for us.
